Course Overview

The Cisco ONS 15454 SDH is a fast and powerful, yet easy to use optical platform that lowers the cost and increases the efficiency of bandwidth delivery within optical transport networks. The Cisco ONS 15454 SDH Provisioning and Operation Training provides instructor-led training that enables the student to learn how to operate the ONS 15454 SDH through classroom instruction and hands-on training on an ONS 15454 SDH system. Working in small groups of up to three people per node, students complete a wide range of tasks covering many system features and functions. Lab exercises rely on the ONS 15454 SDH user documentation for references to specific procedures. Each student has the opportunity to participate in every lab. Open lab periods provide students with opportunities to work with the ONS 15454 SDH system in an unstructured environment. Activities in the open lab are self-directed, but the instructor is available to answer questions and offer guidance.

Who should attend

The course is required for network professionals responsible for installation, deployment and maintenance of the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH product as well as SDH optical network designers, planners and operations.

Prerequisites

Students should have the following knowledge prior to attending:

  • SONET or SDH hierarchy and structure
  • DWDM fundamentals
  • The use of optical test equipment

Course Objectives

After completing this course the student should be able to:

  • Properly handle the optical fiber related to the operation of Cisco optical products as well as describe the components of optical fiber cables and connectors and cleaning
  • Identify the major steps needed to successfully install an ONS 15454 SDH shelf
  • Identify types of IP addressing, common IP addressing scenarios, different system setup scenarios and perform system setup and login
  • Use the Cisco Transport Controller (CTC) software
  • Set the timing parameters in the ONS 15454 SDH from the CTC Timing subtab
  • Describe and provision all protection schemes and their application to the ONS 15454 SDH
  • Describe and provision a point-to-point and linear network topology
  • Identify a circuit and cross-connection and create SDH circuits and tunnels
  • Describe the use of subnetwork connection protection (SNCP) rings in a Cisco ONS 15454 SDH system and create SNCP ring topology
  • Identify a multiplex section shared protection ring (MS-SPRing) in a Cisco ONS 15454 SDH system and create MS-SPRing ring topology
  • Identify the major steps needed to remove a node from an existing MS-SPRing ring
  • Identify the major steps needed to add a node to an existing MS-SPRing ring
  • Navigate through maintenance, performance, alarm and history inside CTC
  • Describe the fundamental concepts of DWDM in the Cisco ONS 15454 SDH system as well as the components that make up the ONS 15216 DWDM product line
  • Describe the Ethernet, IP, and storage area network card types and their application in the ONS 15454 SDH system
  • Identify the difference between a facility loopback, a terminal loopback and a crossconnect loopback
  • Identify the basic elements of Ethernet switching and their application to Cisco optical products
  • Perform bridge and roll procedures on traffic-bearing circuits within an ONS 15xxx network (Bridge and Roll feature)
  • Perform basic troubleshooting procedures
