As a Windows Administrator, for many years I avoided using the command line. After all, why should I use a command line when I’ve got this easy-to-use point and click GUI where I can accomplish the same thing? I now realize that I didn’t see the big picture.
GUI’s are great and I still prefer them for many tasks; but over the years I have come to understand the speed, convenience and power of using the command line (CLI). Microsoft has even acknowledged this with its implementation of Windows 2008 Server Core and Windows PowerShell.
Over the years my love-hate relationship with CLI has evolved to the point that I no longer consider myself a Windows gal. I am a MultiPlatform Engineer. System Administrators and Engineers that are capable of administering both platforms are in demand because many IT departments are now supporting mixed environments that have Windows and Linux servers. We also cannot ignore the fact that Linux has become the base platform for many of today’s hottest technologies including NetApp storage and VMware ESX server. The fact is that technology is an evolutionary field and as IT professionals we must be willing and able to adapt to ever changing IT landscape.
