Branch Storage Consolidation

Storage Consolidation is now a well established trend within the Enterprise data centre, and has resulted in significant operational advantages and reductions in TCO. However, relatively few have extended the strategy to include their branch offices; places that offer a secluded haven for islands of storage, isolated print and file servers. With ever increasing government legislation and governance directives, it will become increasingly difficult for organisations to comply whilst maintaining the dispersed branch storage, operational environment.

Branch storage consolidation can result in significant cost savings, better productivity and improved levels of service. The inhibitor has always been the potential impact on the WAN by centralising the data, with upgrades to higher bandwidths an expensive option. Products such as Cisco’s WAAS (Wide Area Application Services), now offer a powerful solution by delivering centralised applications and access to storage with LAN-like speed to remote branch office users, without compromising visibility or security.

Branch storage consolidation is good business practice. The operative words being: unify, consolidate and centralise. It is increasingly more important for businesses to understand how WAN and data centre technologies are coming together, and how this will translate into business and operational benefits, and sizable reductions in the TCO.
